Foundations of Academic Success: Words of Wisdom (FAS: WoW) introduces you to the various aspects of student and academic life on campus and prepares you to thrive as a successful college student (since there is a difference between a college student and a successful college student). Each section of FAS: WoW is framed by self-authored, true-to-life short stories from actual State University of New York (SUNY) students, employees, and alumni. The advice they share includes a variety of techniques to help you cope with the demands of college. The lessons learned are meant to enlarge your awareness of self with respect to your academic and personal goals and assist you to gain the necessary skills to succeed in college. Foundations of Academic Success is an engaging, informational, and succinct read that connects the reader to personal essays about succeeding in college. The text allows the reader to see different perspectives of the shared experience of navigating higher education. As an adjunct lecturer teaching a course entitled “Learning to Learn,” I see the advice and life lessons discussed as both helpful and informative to many types of students. I believe that this book has a universal appeal for any classroom that is discussing the college life cycle, and would advocate using this text with students who seek out campus services, such as Career Services, Study Abroad, and Academic Advising. I also see this text applicable in the education of student leaders, peer mentors, and peer advocates at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This text goes beyond traditional Student Affairs and Student Development theories to connect the reader with real, honest, and understandable life lessons.

The K-State First Guide to College Student Success is a resource to help students successfully navigate through their first year at Kansas State University. It serves as part of the K-State First mission to create an outstanding university experience for every first-year student by helping with the transition to college-level learning and college life. The textbook helps improve chances for student success by focusing on fostering campus community, offering resources for diverse activities, highlighting academic expectations, and empowering students with personal responsibility and social agency. Instructors are encouraged to use the textbook in their K-State First classes, and it is also offered as a direct resource for students. In any university setting there are often unwritten rules that students are expected to understand, and this guide addresses and answers those questions directly. The information included within allows students the chance to explore the general history and traditions of Kansas State University, how to foster positive relationships, maintain personal health, and offers academic and social resources. Several sections focus on expectations for students and their behavior inside and outside the classroom. Skills such as time management, information literacy, writing, and financial literacy are also explored in detail. The diversity section encourages students to recognize the importance of varying perspectives and relationships while in their college communities. Also offered within are health and wellness resources that link directly to specific pages on the K-State website, and discussion points and resources linked to the Common Book that every freshman is expected to read. Several students involved in the K-State First programs also offer their personal advice throughout so those reading understand the real-world implications of the advice and information they’re being given. Ultimately, this guide encourages students to be engaged learners and to enjoy all facets of education, both inside and outside the classroom.

This edition also features resources for the 2017-18 K-State Book Network (KSBN) Common Book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon

"Open Educational Resources (OER) are any type of educational materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license. The nature of these open materials means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt, and re-share them. OERs range from textbooks to curricula, syllabi, lecture notes, assignments, tests, projects, audio, video, and animation" (Definition by UNESCO).

In spring 2016, SBVC faculty and students voted in the affirmative to support faculty use of high quality open educational resources to reduce the cost of textbooks and supplies for students. The SBVC Associated Student Government placed on the ballot an OER initiative and the SBVC Academic Senate passed SP16.01 Textbook Affordability and Open Education Resources resolution. In fall 2016, SBVC was awarded an OER grant per the stipulations of the College Textbook Affordability Act of 2015 which incentivizes CCC and CSU campuses to reduce costs for college students by encouraging faculty to adopt high quality open educational resources.

The California Open Online Library for Education website is maintained by the three state of California higher education systems to provide faculty direct access to peer reviewed OER instructional materials.

This SBVC OER website curates OER instructional materials and support services for SBVC faculty, students, and staff. The use of quality free and low cost instructional materials by faculty give all students the opportunity to succeed from the start of the semester and onward.

Embedded in the OER movement is the belief that education is not a privilege reserved for the few who can financially afford it but a human right for all who desire to pursue it.

Commit to making a difference in reducing the cost of instructional materials for SBVC learners through the use of high quality open educational resources. Explore this SBVC OER website.
